Okay so I have not done any real speed work lately except for running from the neighborhood dogs that my moronic neighbors can't seem to put on a leash. I'm going to get my revenge some day. It's just to close to Christmas to do it now and I just know Santa is watching. As long as he can't read my thoughts I should be good for this year.
Anyway, so I tried out a new speed workout this morning before work and... well I crashed and burned. I think maybe I should have built up to this workout instead of going all in right away. Here is what the workout entailed.
3/4 mile jog to the track
400 easy pace
400 tempo pace
400 easy
400 tempo
400 easy
800 tempo
400 easy
1200 tempo
400 easy
1600 tempo
400 easy
1200 tempo
400 easy
800 tempo
400 easy
400 tempo
400 easy
400 tempo
Jog home
I was going along well until midway through the second 1200. I just could not keep the pace. I was able to keep it a little faster then the easy pace however and then turned around and completed the 800 fine. However my legs refused to do the last two 400's at a tempo pace. I don't think my heart was in it. I believe I may need a little bit more of a rest between the tempo runs.
But I am stubborn and have promised myself that I will complete this workout as is and with a full effort by the end of the year. Through the snow and ice if I have to. My wife tells me I'm an idiot but that is par for the course within the first hour that she is awake. Anyone else want to try this with me?

Don't listen to your wife - isn't she the one that sabotaged your long run a couple of weeks ago?
I would love to try that workout, but I think the track was partly to blame for my achilles blow up recently. I am going to approach the track with caution from now on.
Wow, that's quite the workout! once i'm back to 100% and ready to start speedwork again, i'll check back with you to see if you still recommend it :)
Happy Thanksgiving!
That is definitely a very aggressive workout for speed. I have done a lot of speedwork in the past couple years and even that looks pretty tough.
Give yourself a break on that one and find what works for you. Try doing a fartlek during your next intermediate and see how that goes.
Best of luck.
if i can figure out what those distances are in miles, I'll do it with you! ie if you tell me...I'm too lazy to think about it on my own. ;-)
Sounds killer, I would've crashed and burned too. I think you could do it by the end of the year, it is amazing how quickly the body will adapt. Good luck, and Happy Thanksgiving!
WOW that workout is intense! Is that 27 laps total? I tried to count! Thats crazy! Great job for trying that workout!!
Okay, that looks tough!! Way to hang in as long as you did. You can totally do it by the end of the year. And I'll read about it, but that will be the extent of my participation. Sorry!
Love how you go straight for a serious speed workout-- if you can do that much now, those dogs must be working you! I'm gonna keep up with the track work over the winter, although the ice can be treacherous and hard to see in the dark-- all part of the fun, right?
Geez, that looks tough! Lemme recover a bit, then I'll think about it. I need to add some speedwork to my slowpokiness :)
That's a lot of laps. Dayum!
You're poor wife. Does she know that you abuse her like this in your blog? LOL!
That workout sounds intense. 400 is about 0.25miles right? That's a lot of miles. I think I'll work up to that.
I'm glad you didn't see my comment that way. I'll just have to be more careful what I say and where. Oops. Oh well. Happy Turkey Day!
Speed workouts have zero appeal. You're way tougher than me. :o)
